DIY $10 Crate and Barrel Lookalike Vases

If you're in need of some cute neutral and modern decor items, (but don't have $79 to spend on a vase at Crate & Barrel), look no further! This is a quick and easy project and you'll be so pleased with the results.

Materials:

  • 3-4 thrifted vases or tabletop decor items (candlesticks, etc)

  • 2-3 cans of Rustoleum Textured or Rustoleum Stone spray paint (I purchased a few different colors to get a variety)

  • Microfiber cloths for cleaning

  • Goo-Gone

  • Small medium or fine grit sanding block

  • Old sheet of cardboard or dropcloth for a workspace

  • Pampas grass variety pack (I ordered this one on Amazon

Start by heading to your favorite local thrift store. I went to Savers and purchased 3 vases for $4-6 each. Look for rounded edges and unique shapes, singular cut-flower vases, tall and thin vases. Anything that has potential but needs a little sprucing up!

Once you've setup a workspace (I would recommend a garage or grassy area with cardboard or a dropcloth), you'll want to clean your items! I started with Goo-Gone and a micro-fiber cloth to get anything sticky off the surface. Then, I wiped each piece down with water and little bit of dish soap to get rid of any remaining grime.

Depending on the material of your pieces, you may also want to sand the piece with a small sanding block (fine or medium grit) to ensure that the paint sticks to your piece. If you do sand your piece, be sure to clean your piece again with water and dry it off completely!

Now, the fun part. In your well-ventilated garage space or outside, spray each of your pieces with the Rustoleum spray paint. There may be hard-to reach spots that you'll have to get with the second or third coat. Spray 3-4 coats per piece, allowing at least 30 minutes of drying time between coats. Ensure that your piece is fully painted and allow it to dry for 24 hours.

Once your pieces are all dry, bring out your pampas grass! I recommend opening the package outside and shaking out the grass pieces a bit. They can shed a lot! Choose a variety of 8-10 grass pieces per vase, and arrange in each piece to your liking.

Time to setup your new decor items! I styled mine together on my dining room table like so. These would look great on a coffee table, hutch, TV stand, etc. For under $30, you now have 3 beautiful and unique vases for your home!

Cheers and keep creating <3
